Asia’s first animation theme park Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) in Ipoh, which is expected to begin operations as early as March 2016, aims to nurture and grow young local talents to run the show.

Animation Theme Park Sdn Bhd Founder Ramelle Ramli said the goal would be realised via collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports by providing training, development and employment opportunities to the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) students. MAPS will train at least 40 IKBN students every year, he told reporters after the signing ceremony of a MoU between MAPS and the ministry on the collaboration here recently.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and MAPS Chief Executive Officer Darren McLean were present. Ramelle said MAPS would also hire 20 full-time employees from IKBN every year and pay them salaries five to 10 per cent higher than the market rate. In the first phase of the project, MAPS will hire 400 employees, followed by 600 in the second phase, he said, adding that MAPS would be run almost entirely by a local workforce.

Meanwhile, Khairy said the agreement was part of the IKBN transformation plan in forging cooperation with the private sector, apart from expanding the job market for IKBN students. “Through this cooperation, we can also learn from the private sector on the training modules required and their expectations of IKBN trainees,” he said.

The Movie Animation Park Studios theme park will feature over 40 rides including Malaysia’s first DreamWorks Animation dedicated zone with popular animated characters like Mr Peabody and Sherman, The Croods, Megamind, and Casper the Friendly Ghost. Joining animation characters from DreamWorks is also the local favourite animation character, BoBoiBoy created by MONSTA.

It is expected to attract 1.4 million visitors in its first year of operations. Animation Theme Park, the developer, owner and operator of MAPS, is also collaborating with PCB Development Sdn Bhd and Sanderson Project Development Malaysia Sdn Bhd. — Bernama for Perak Movie Animation Park Studios.
