Earthquake hits Ranau in Sabah

Sabah Earthquake

A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the state of Sabah on Malaysia’s Borneo island early Friday, US geologists said, but there was no tsunami warning issued.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located 19 kilometres from the town of Ranau and 54 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu in the district of Sabah.

The tremor, which lasted for about 30 seconds, caused minimal damage to buildings.

According to the Ranau police, several business premises in Ranau town reported shattered windows in the buildings.

Malaysian social media users uploaded photos showing damaged roads, shattered storefront windows and cracked walls and floors in Sabah.

But there were no initial reports of major damage.

Major earthquakes are rare in Malaysia, which lies just outside the Ring of Fire, the belt of seismic activity running around the Pacific basin.

Singaporeans head to Malaysia for holidays as ringgit hits new low

More Singaporeans are heading to Malaysia during the June holidays, as the exchange rate hit a new low, according to travel agencies. The ringgit stood at 2.78 against the Singapore dollar on Wednesday (Jun 10, 2015), as travel agencies reported a 10 per cent spike in bookings for Malaysia travel packages for the June holidays, as compared to last year. Travel agencies also reported that 15 per cent of the travellers made last-minute bookings for tours in Malaysia.

“We have received an increase in enquiries on travelling to Malaysia. The number of tourists heading to Malaysia has increased 10 per cent. Most of them travel to Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Penang, Langkawi and Kuching,” said Ms Rebecca Chia, marketing communication executive at Chan Brothers Travel.

Long queues were also spotted at money changers at Raffles Place on Wednesday, with some offering 2.76 ringgit for one Singapore dollar. Some money changers told Channel 8 that from end-May to June, the demand for ringgit doubled, as compared to April. Some money changers also reported that they ran out of the currency by early afternoon on Wednesday.

Analysts have predicted that the ringgit could slide further to 2.8 against the Singapore dollar this month. However, they added that there could still be a possibility for a rebound and the exchange rate would not decrease drastically in near future, depending on the performance of the greenback and oil prices. The exchange rate could also depend on Malaysia’s political situation and whether the Fed increases interest rates this year.

“You might see a bit of continued sort of weakness to some extent, largely because of the dollar’s strength,” said Mr Saktiandi Supaat, head of FX Research, Global Markets, at Maybank. “In our view, it would probably continue to some extent over the next three months, largely because of the expectations that the US data might improve significantly.” – The Straits Times.

‘Flying ships’ coming from Melaka factory

CM launches new low-altitude flying craft that can land on water.
fly ship_300MELAKA: Melaka will manufacture “flying ships” or multipurpose Wing-In-Ground Effect aircraft that can cruise at low altitudes of up to 150m over flat surfaces, most often over water.

Chief Minister Idris Haron said the aircraft would be produced at a factory near here by 2014. The manufacture of the vehicle, using South Korean technology, would lure more investors to the state.
The vehicle operates somewhat like a hovercraft and an aircraft and can be used for search and rescue operations in the ocean. “Besides, it can also be used for tourism purposes,” Idris said after launching the Jebat M727 ground effect vehicle on Friday.

The vehicle, built by Aron Rinani Sdn Bhd, can fly at up to 150m and has a range of 800km.
Aron Rinani president Noor Azerai Ahmad said the first vehicle, costing US$1 million, would be ready by June at the assembly plant in Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah.

As the current factory can only produce seven vehicles a year, a new plant will be constructed in Teluk Gong, Alor Gajah, with the capabiity to produce 50 vehicles a year.
He said the company had received orders for 100 units from several companies.
